Dental Crown Work
Serving Kanata, Stittsville and Ottawa, Ontario
A dental crown, also called a tooth crown, is a dental restoration which covers a damaged or broken tooth. Dental crowns are often necessary after a root canal or on a tooth which has been broken.
Traditional Dental Crowns
Dental crowns have been used for more than 100 years, and metal amalgam dental crowns were traditionally used to protect damaged teeth. Early amalgam compounds contained as much as 50% mercury and were capable of causing more damage than they were meant to repair by deteriorating the soft tissues around the crown and along the gum line.
Metal amalgam dental fixtures now contain less mercury than in the past, but trace amounts of mercury are still present in many of these restorations, especially ones that were placed more than a decade ago. For this reason, many patients turn to cosmetic dentistry for porcelain dental crowns.
Porcelain Dental Crowns
Porcelain dental crowns contain no metal. They are carved from a solid piece of porcelain, often using dental technology like CEREC CAD/CAM machines, which allow Ottawa cosmetic dentist Dr. Ami Barakat to create your dental crown in-office while you wait.
Dental porcelain is highly resilient. It can be made in almost any shape and tinted to match your surrounding teeth. For these reasons, porcelain dental crowns are swiftly becoming preferred by all health-conscious dentists, particularly in metal-free offices like Dentistry at Main.
Creating Dental Crowns
Some dental crowns can be easily made in our office, but for others which require more detail and attention, we use Classic Labs to create your custom restoration. We generally work with Classic Labs when applying crowns to your front teeth. Since Classic Labs specializes in porcelain dental restorations, their work is exceptionally natural-looking and often produces the best possible outcome.
Your dental crown can be placed the day it is created, and you can eat and drink normally with your dental crown, just as you would with a healthy, natural tooth. If your dental crown was created to cover a dental implant, the results will be similar to if it were covering a prepared tooth.
