Ottawa implant dentist

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots designed to replace your natural roots after a tooth has been lost. Because dental implants are directly integrated into your jawbone, they provide a strong foundation for tooth crowns, allowing restorations to function just as well as your natural teeth.

Some of the other benefits of dental implants include:

  • Durability
  • Improved oral health
  • Permanent restoration
  • No need to alter adjacent teeth (as with dental bridges)
  • No slippage (as with dentures)
  • Look and feel like natural teeth again
  • More comfortable than removable dentures

A dental implant is an excellent option to replace a missing tooth. The strength and stability of dental implants provide several advantages over other treatment options, such as dental bridges or dentures.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants are installed through a three-step procedure that will require a few office visits, all spread out over a period of three to nine months.

During your first visit, Ottawa implant dentist Dr. Ami Barakat will place the dental implant – a small titanium cylinder – into the bone socket of your missing tooth. After placement, your jawbone will take two to six months to heal, and as it heals, the jawbone will grow around the dental implant, providing a high level of stability. This process is called osseointegration.

In order for osseointegration to be successful, your jawbone must have enough material to support the dental implant. If your jawbone is too thin, bone grafting may be required in order to ensure the success of your dental implant procedure.

Once osseointegration is successful, Dr. Barakat will proceed to attach a piece called the abutment to your implant. The abutment is the small connecting post that will hold your new tooth. Finally, Dr. Barakat will take an impression of your teeth in order to create the custom tooth crown that will be affixed to your implant permanently.

Mini Implants

For patients who can’t afford full implants, Dr. Barakat also offers mini-implants as an alternative treatment option. Because mini-implants can be installed for a fraction of the price, they are an appealing option for many patients. Mini-implants can also be completed in a single office visit, making them far more convenient than full dental implants, which take months to install. Mini-implants are most often used to anchor a complete or removable partial denture.

If you are struggling with dentures that do not fit well, you may want to consider mini-implants. Dr. Barakat will install several implants in your jaw to stabilize the denture. These will be fastened into place and tightened with a winged wrench. Then, Dr. Barakat will adapt your denture to fit the mini-implants by drilling corresponding wells into the denture at the exact points where the mini-implants have been placed in your mouth. A metal housing will be contained inside of the wells to enable your dentures to conveniently snap on and off each implant.
