Porcelain and Resin Dental Inlays / Onlays
Serving Kanata, Stittsville and Ottawa, Ontario
One of the two main options available for tooth coloured fillings is porcelain and resin dental inlays and onlays. A porcelain filling is different from a composite filling because it must be sculpted from a piece of porcelain.
Only a few years ago, the only technology for this was available at costly dental labs, but new CEREC technology allows Ottawa cosmetic dentist Dr. Ami Barakat to create custom dental inlays and onlays in his office during your appointment.
Porcelain Dental Inlays and Onlays Procedure
The procedure for creating porcelain dental inlays and onlays is made much simpler by using the CEREC sculpting technology. Dr. Barakat will take digital blue-ray images of your affected tooth, which is translatable by the CEREC computer into a 3-D image of your tooth. Based on those images, CEREC can sculpt a porcelain inlay or onlay that will perfectly protect your tooth from further decay.
CEREC technology is also used for creating all-porcelain dental crowns. Porcelain inlays and onlays are a good option if there is too much decay for a single filling, but not enough to warrant an entire tooth crown.
Because Dentistry at Main uses CEREC technology, we are able to prepare and create your porcelain inlay or onlay in a single visit. Other cosmetic dentists may require that you return for a second visit after an impression has been taken of your prepared tooth.
Benefits of Porcelain Dental Inlays and Onlays
Dental porcelain is a highly resilient material, often as strong as or stronger than your natural tooth enamel. It can also be tinted to match your natural tooth colour almost perfectly.
Porcelain dental inlays and onlays are more durable than dental composite fillings, and more conservative than a tooth crown. Additionally, they are completely metal-free, and therefore unlikely to damage your tooth structure the way metal fillings do when exposed to extreme temperature changes.
Perhaps the biggest benefit of porcelain dental inlays and onlays is that they can be made to look like a part of your natural tooth, rather than being a dark, highly visible spot on your tooth when you smile or speak.
