Kanata Dental Implants in Ontario

What is implant dentistry?

Implant dentistry is a field of dentistry which allows Ottawa implant dentist Dr. Ami Barakat to replace a lost tooth with an individual post and crown, rather than a dental bridge. Because dental implants are individual restorations, they do not rely on the health or structure of neighboring teeth to support the false tooth. They also look and feel like healthy, natural teeth.

Is implant dentistry safe?

Implant dentistry has been used extensively in the past decade, and employs a surgical titanium post to anchor porcelain dental crowns. Because implant dentistry uses titanium, which is a relatively stable and biocompatible metal, and because your bone material naturally responds to a titanium post in much the same way as to the root of your tooth, it is a relatively safe procedure that is almost always successful when coupled with healthy jaw bone and gum tissue.

How should I care for my dental implant?

You may care for your dental implant by practicing good dental hygiene, including:

  • Brushing twice a day
  • Flossing at least once a day
  • Having regular professional dental cleanings
  • Visiting the dentist immediately if your dental implant is damaged

What are the parts of a dental implant?

A dental implant is comprised of a titanium post which is implanted directly into the bone of the jaw. Once the titanium post is rooted in place, a porcelain dental crown is affixed to it, creating the appearance of a natural, healthy tooth.

How long will it take for the titanium post to become rooted in place?

Because every person is genetically different and experiences bone growth at varying rates, it may take 2 to 6 months for the bone material to sufficiently support a dental implant.

What are mini implants?

Mini implants are another option for patients, particularly those who may be concerned about the cost of dental implants. Mini dental implants are similar to traditional dental implants, but are only about 1/8 of an inch in diameter, about the width of a wooden toothpick. They require less preparation and less time to implant. Many patients, particularly those who use dentures, find that mini implants are able to offer the stability to eat normally.
