What is TMJ disorder?

TMJ disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMD, is the misalignment of your jaw joint. Misalignment of your jaw can cause a number of symptoms ranging from mild limitation of motion to severe pain or TMJ headaches.

What are the causes of TMJ disorder?

Often, the cause of TMJ disorder is unclear. However, there are several possible factors which may cause this disorder:

  • Bad bite
  • The jaw joint moves out of alignment
  • The joint’s cartilage is damaged by arthritis
  • The joint is damaged by a blow or other impact
  • The muscles that stabilize the joint become fatigued due to overwork, often as a result of grinding your teeth
