Questions About Your Tooth Crown
Serving Kanata, Stittsville and Ottawa, Ontario
What can a tooth crown repair?
A tooth crown covers a damaged tooth. Tooth crowns are usually used when a portion of the tooth is lost that cannot be repaired with a filling or a porcelain inlay or onlay.
Why do you only use porcelain tooth crowns, not metal ones?
Porcelain is a particularly desirable material for dental restorations because it:
- Does not expand and contract with cold and heat the way metal does
- Can be made to look exactly like natural teeth
- Is as strong as or stronger than your natural tooth
For these reasons, Dentistry at Main uses metal-free restorations exclusively.
How long will my tooth crown last?
Because we use teeth crowns made of porcelain, which is very resilient, your tooth crown is likely to last as long as the base of the tooth it is protecting. If you neglect your teeth, the roots and gums will be weakened, resulting in the need for additional restorations. However, as long as you are caring for your teeth as recommended, it is likely that your tooth crown will last many years.
How should I care for my tooth crowns?
You should care for your porcelain tooth crown like you care for your natural teeth, by practicing good oral hygiene and going for regular dental cleanings. Brushing twice a day and thoroughly flossing around your tooth crown will help prevent debris from building up around your teeth and weakening them.
Will people be able to tell that my tooth crown is not my natural tooth?
A skillfully made tooth crown is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. While you may be aware that you have a tooth crown, others will not be able to tell it is not your natural tooth without closely inspecting it.
