Serving Kanata, Stittsville and Ottawa, Ontario

Ottawa teeth bonding

Tooth bonding, or dental bonding, is the layering of dental composite material over the surface of a tooth. Ottawa cosmetic dentist Dr. Ami Barakat may recommend tooth bonding for:

  • Repairs to chips in teeth
  • Repairing cracks in teeth
  • Reducing gaps between teeth
  • Treating chemically or genetically stained teeth
  • Preventing tooth decay

Tooth Bonding for Repairs

Tooth bonding may be a preferred option for repairing small chips or cracks in teeth because it does not require the removal of any enamel, and is therefore less invasive than the application of porcelain veneers. If the damage to your tooth or teeth is minor and if you are happy with your smile, tooth bonding can give you the appearance of a whole, healthy tooth without changing the shape.

Tooth bonding may also be used to reduce the size of gaps between teeth by building up several layers of composite on the surface of your teeth. If the changes you would like to make to the appearance of your teeth are minor, tooth bonding may be adequate to make those changes. However, depending on your aesthetic goals, Dr. Barakat may recommend porcelain veneers.

Tooth Bonding as a Whitening Treatment

For individuals who have severe discolouration, such as those caused by chemicals like mercury, tooth whitening treatments may not be effective, and tooth bonding can be an excellent alternative. While the colour of dental composite can be adjusted to match your teeth, you may choose to have a whiter tint of tooth bonding used to create a whiter smile.

Tooth Bonding for Preventative Dentistry

Some individuals choose to protect their teeth through the use of tooth bonding. Because tooth bonding usually consists of several layers of dental composite applied to the surface of your teeth, it can protect your teeth from corrosive outside sources.

Tooth Sealing for Children

The same principle may be applied to children. Many dentists now recommend having children’s teeth sealed or bonded to help protect them against cavities. However, you should be aware that tooth bonding cannot protect your children’s tooth roots from decay or in between teeth if they are not cared for with good dental hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and regular professional dental cleanings.
