What to Expect With Dental Implants
Serving Kanata, Stittsville and Ottawa, Ontario
Dental implants are an effective and advanced way to replace lost or missing teeth. Because you have two options, dental implants and mini dental implants, the process and outcome will vary slightly depending on which procedure you choose.
Dental Implants Procedure
The procedure for inserting a dental implant may sound simple, but requires extensive training and experience. A titanium post is inserted into your jaw bone where the root of your tooth used to be. If Dr. Barakat is using a full dental implant, your bone material will require 2 to 6 months to grow back around the titanium.
Once the titanium post is secure in your jaw, Ottawa implant dentist Dr. Ami Barakat will attach the porcelain tooth crown. If a mini dental implant can be used, you may receive your porcelain tooth crown the same day as you receive the mini titanium implant.
Resilience of Dental Implants
Dental implants and the porcelain dental crowns attached to them are extremely resilient. If you care for them diligently, they may last as long as or longer than your surrounding natural teeth. If at any time your porcelain tooth crown chips or becomes loose, you can return to Dentistry at Main to have it refitted or repaired.
Appearance of Dental Implants
Dental implants look almost exactly like natural teeth. Because they are simply a porcelain tooth crown attached to a titanium post, they have all the options available to a tooth crown, and can be made to match the teeth around them in size, shape, and colour. Dental implants often look more natural than other types of restorations because, unlike dental bridges, they do not require support from the surrounding teeth, and are therefore free standing.
Caring for Your Dental Implant
Caring for your dental implant is as simple as following good dental hygiene. You should:
- Brush twice daily
- Floss daily
- Have professional teeth cleanings twice a year
- Whiten your teeth as usual
It is unlikely that your dental implant will suffer damage from regular food, but you should be aware that, like your natural teeth, chewing on ice or hard candy can weaken the structure and may create chips, cracks, or breaks in your dental implant.
